BCCI to Conduct Performance Review
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that it will conduct a comprehensive review of the men’s T20I team‘s performance. This decision follows a challenging white-ball tour of the United Kingdom, which included series defeats against Ireland and England. The review is scheduled to take place immediately after the ongoing England tour concludes.
Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, confirmed the upcoming review, acknowledging that the team is currently experiencing a difficult phase. He expressed confidence that the board would identify the underlying issues and work towards resolving them. The review will specifically examine the performances of both the players and the coaching staff.
The announcement comes after India, the reigning T20 World Cup champions, suffered a significant nine-wicket defeat against England in Bristol. This loss gave the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The review process is expected to commence on July 19, following the conclusion of the ODI series in England.
Recent Series Defeats Highlight Concerns
India‘s white-ball campaign has faced considerable setbacks in recent weeks. Before the England series, the team experienced a 0-2 T20I series whitewash against Ireland, marking their first-ever series loss to Ireland. Subsequently, England secured their first-ever bilateral T20I series win over India in a series of two or more matches.
The defeat in the fourth T20I against England saw India manage 158/7 after opting to bat first. Captain Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 80 runs, but received limited support from other batsmen. England successfully chased the target with more than six overs remaining, with captain Harry Brook scoring 79 not out and Phil Salt contributing 59 not out.
These consecutive series losses have brought several concerns to light for the Indian side. The batting unit has reportedly struggled to adapt to seam-friendly conditions. Additionally, the bowling attack has been without key players such as all-rounder Hardik Pandya and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and the team’s fielding has not met expected standards.
Coaching Staff and Captaincy Under Scrutiny
The performance review will also include head coach Gautam Gambhir, whose role is under scrutiny following the back-to-back series losses. Although Gambhir‘s contract extends until 2027, the team’s recent results have led to questions about his position, according to BCCI sources.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate acknowledged the challenge for the team to accept that they are underachieving in foreign conditions. He emphasised the need for players to understand the process of adapting quickly to varied playing environments, especially after playing on flat pitches in India for much of the year.
Both series defeats have occurred since Shreyas Iyer took over as T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. Ten Doeschate supported Iyer, noting that he is leading from the front with the bat and needs time and support to grow into his captaincy role. He also mentioned that the return of players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah could make a significant difference to the team.
The final T20I of the series between India and England is scheduled to be played in Southampton.
