Chelsea Confirms Signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa
Chelsea has confirmed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The forward has agreed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033 and is set to join Xabi Alonso‘s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season. This move concludes a pursuit that reportedly spanned over two years for the London club.
The transfer fee agreed between Chelsea and Aston Villa is a record for a British player, valued at £117 million. This club-record deal was reported shortly before Rogers participated in England‘s match against France in the World Cup third-place play-off.
Negotiations and Player Interest
Sources familiar with the deal indicate that formal negotiations between Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Rogers’ representatives commenced on a Thursday. This was a day after England’s semi-final defeat in the World Cup. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly contacted Rogers on the subsequent Friday to outline his plans for the player, with personal terms being agreed upon the same day.
The deal involved several key figures from Chelsea’s ownership and sporting director team, including Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, and Sam Jewell. Additionally, Chelsea captain Reece James spoke with Rogers while they were in the England camp, and teammate Cole Palmer also reached out via text message. This collective effort was seen as a strong signal of Chelsea’s commitment to securing Rogers’ signature.
Rogers, who scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists for Villa last season, was a target for several major clubs in England and abroad. Despite having five years remaining on his contract with Aston Villa, Chelsea ultimately secured his transfer, overcoming interest from rivals like Arsenal.
Rogers’ Impact and Versatility
Rogers arrives at Chelsea having established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions of goals and assists were involved in 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He played a role in guiding the Midlands club to a top-four finish and later lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.

Villa’s Stance and Financial Considerations
Aston Villa had previously resisted selling Rogers, with manager Unai Emery reportedly considering him the club’s best player and among the top five in the Premier League. In November, Rogers was given a third new contract in less than two years, highlighting Villa’s initial desire to retain him.
Last summer, Emery had reportedly asked Rogers to stay for another season, recognising his importance to the team, especially given challenges in strengthening attacking positions. However, Villa internally acknowledged that selling key assets would be necessary to sustain progress and comply with financial regulations.
The club had set benchmarks for Rogers’ valuation, considering recent acquisitions by other clubs, such as Liverpool‘s signings of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz in 2025, and Manchester City‘s signing of Elliot Anderson earlier this month. Villa sought a fee exceeding these figures for Rogers, given his attacking role.
The relationship between Chelsea and Villa was described as strong, which facilitated the negotiations. Chelsea had reportedly informed Rogers’ representatives earlier in the summer that they would not make a move for the player while England was still competing in the World Cup, aiming to avoid distraction. Villa also preferred not to sell before the tournament, believing Rogers’ involvement would increase his market value. Villa’s co-owner and chairman had the final say on the transfer.
Villa had anticipated Rogers’ departure once England exited the World Cup and subsequently secured a direct replacement. The money received from Rogers’ transfer is expected to be used to sign a priority fast winger, with targets including West Ham‘s Crysencio Summerville and Paris Saint-Germain‘s Ibrahim Mbaye.
