India reclaim top T20I ranking after Zimbabwe series success
India has returned to the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team rankings following an unassailable 2-0 lead in their series against Zimbabwe in Harare. The reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions displaced England, who had previously taken the top spot after a 4-0 T20I series victory.
The Indian batting lineup played a crucial role in the second T20I against Zimbabwe. This followed a dominant performance in the first match, where bowlers and a record-setting innings by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi led the charge. In the second T20I, after losing two early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer formed a 66-run partnership. Tilak Varma also contributed a notable knock, scoring 60 runs off 29 balls.
Kishan, who was the highest scorer in the game with 81 runs off 44 balls, commented on the team’s strategy. He emphasised the importance of building a partnership and extending the innings, especially after early wickets. The team’s plans were executed effectively, leading to their strong performance.
Chasing a target of 220, Zimbabwe lost five wickets within the first nine overs and were eventually bowled out for 129, securing India’s unassailable lead in the T20I series. The two teams were scheduled to play again on July 26.
Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Performance
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued to set new records, becoming the first player in men’s international cricket to achieve multiple scores of 50 or more before turning 16. The left-handed opener accomplished this feat during the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday, where he scored 81 runs off 48 balls. His innings helped India reach a total of 192/5 after they chose to bat first.
Previously, only Nepal’s Kushal Malla had recorded a 50-plus score in men’s internationals before reaching the age of 16. Sooryavanshi has now surpassed this, achieving two such scores. On a pitch that favoured bowlers, Sooryavanshi displayed a different aspect of his batting, starting cautiously with 11 runs from his first 10 balls and 26 from his first 20 deliveries before reaching his second T20I fifty in 31 balls.
His innings featured characteristic strokeplay, including a boundary off Brad Evans and a 102-metre six off off-spinner Sikandar Raza. He also executed a reverse-sweep for a boundary against Wesley Madhevere. While Sooryavanshi settled in, his opening partner Abhishek Sharma’s recent struggles with the bat continued, as he edged Blessing Muzarabani for two runs.
Sooryavanshi then contributed to a 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who scored 29. He later shared a 50-run partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer, who made 27. Despite looking poised for a century, Sooryavanshi was dismissed by Wesley Madhevere, caught by Brad Evans at long-off, ending his innings on 81 runs.
After the departures of Sooryavanshi and Shreyas, India’s scoring rate slowed, with the middle order adding only 47 runs in the final five overs. Rinku Singh’s 25 runs off 14 balls helped India approach the 200-run mark, concluding their innings at 192/5, a total considered competitive on a bowling-friendly surface.
Squad Depth and Experimentation
With the series already decided, India entered the third and final T20 International against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club with the objective of testing their squad depth and pursuing a clean sweep. The consecutive victories have helped the team regain confidence after a challenging tour of Ireland and England, which saw them suffer six consecutive defeats. Under new captain Shreyas Iyer, the team has shown an impressive response, building momentum ahead of a demanding international season.
The final match provided India with an opportunity for experimentation. Iyer had indicated that changes were likely, especially after fast bowler Prince Yadav sustained a hamstring injury during his match-winning performance in the second T20I. Left-arm seamer Ashok Sharma was a strong contender to replace him, with uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh and all-rounder Suryansh Shedge also considered for opportunities.
A 3-0 series win would mark another significant achievement for India, as they had not completed a T20I whitewash over Zimbabwe since 2010. Beyond the result, the team management aimed to evaluate fringe players and enhance squad depth for future assignments. India’s batting has gained momentum throughout the series, with Ishan Kishan regaining form, Tilak Varma providing consistency in the middle order, and teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continuing to impress with his aggressive approach. Although Abhishek Sharma has had a lean period with the bat, his effective bowling spells have highlighted his all-round value.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe was determined to avoid a whitewash. Brian Bennett showed glimpses of potential, but the hosts struggled to match India’s discipline and consistency. With another batting-friendly pitch and favourable weather conditions predicted in Harare, the stage was set for an entertaining conclusion to the series on July 26.
