Under the Laws of the Game set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), players are permitted to celebrate goals, but excessive celebrations or those that deliberately waste time are not allowed.
Crucially, IFAB’s Law 12 indicates that merely leaving the field of play to celebrate is not automatically a cautionable offense, provided players return to the field as quickly as possible. A yellow card becomes mandatory under specific circumstances, such as removing a shirt, climbing a perimeter fence, acting provocatively, or covering the face with an object.
Because Martinez jumped over advertising boards rather than climbing a perimeter fence, and the referee seemingly determined that the celebration did not pose security concerns, a second yellow card was not issued. The final decision rested on the referee’s interpretation of the law.
Had the referee shown Martinez a second yellow card for his celebration, he would have been dismissed from the match and subsequently suspended for Argentina’s semi-final against England. However, he will now be available for one of the tournament’s significant matches.
