BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that Rohit Sharma will continue to represent India in ODIs, dismissing claims about his retirement. Saikia stated that there have been no discussions indicating that the match at Lord’s would be his last.
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has questioned the timing of this debate. He emphasized that if selectors intended to move on from experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the 2027 World Cup, this decision should have been communicated much earlier.
Ashwin’s Perspective on Communication and Experience
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted the need for the experience of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the upcoming tour of South Africa. He acknowledged that other players, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, are performing well, but stressed the importance of veteran presence. Ashwin argued that if the team management had decided to transition away from these players, they should have been informed immediately after the Champions Trophy to avoid prolonged uncertainty.
Ashwin, who himself retired from international cricket after being informed of the team management’s decision to look beyond him, underscored the importance of honest communication with senior players. He noted that while no player enjoys being told the team wants to move on, clear communication is essential. He recounted accepting a similar decision when communicated to him in Australia.
He further questioned why these discussions are emerging now, with approximately 10 to 12 months remaining before the 2027 ODI World Cup. Ashwin pointed out that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have continued to perform, making the current timing of the debate puzzling if a transition was truly desired.
Kapil Dev’s Call for Celebration
Cricket icon Kapil Dev has urged fans to focus on celebrating Rohit Sharma’s significant contributions to the game rather than lamenting his eventual retirement. Dev emphasized the immense joy and entertainment Rohit Sharma has provided to cricket fans globally throughout his career.
Speaking to ANI, Kapil Dev responded to the speculation about Rohit Sharma’s potential final ODI at Lord’s. He stated that rather than feeling sad, fans should be happy and celebrate Rohit’s career, drawing parallels to other legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and Sachin Tendulkar, who have all concluded their careers.
The 1983 World Cup-winning captain expressed his hope that Rohit Sharma would conclude his career in a memorable fashion, ideally by scoring a century in his final match. Kapil Dev believes that when Rohit Sharma eventually departs from the international stage, his life and the happiness he has brought should be celebrated.
Rohit Sharma, at 39 years old, made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast on June 23, 2007. He has already stepped away from both the T20I and Test formats of the game. The recent discussions around his ODI future gained momentum during the ongoing series against England, where he recorded scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs.
