Sachin Tendulkar advocates for meritocracy amid NEET protests

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has addressed the ongoing nationwide protests concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, emphasising the importance of hard work and meritocracy. In a post shared on X on Thursday, Tendulkar reflected on the values imparted by his late father, Professor Ramesh Tendulkar, and expressed concern for students who feel their efforts have not been acknowledged.

Tendulkar highlighted a key lesson from his father: “Failure is okay, cheating is not. Never take shortcuts.” These remarks come as demonstrations escalate across the country, with students demanding accountability and reforms following widespread anger over the controversy.

Integrity in Education

Without directly commenting on the investigation or the protests, Tendulkar underscored society’s collective responsibility to uphold the integrity of education. He stressed that honesty should be valued over shortcuts, and that a culture prioritising outcomes over effort risks undermining meritocracy.

The former India captain acknowledged the frustration of students who believe their dedication has not been fairly rewarded. He stated, “Today, when students feel disappointed that their hard work hasn’t been rewarded, it is understandable. Collectively, we should all work together towards ensuring they don’t feel this way again.”

Tendulkar further clarified that this responsibility extends beyond government bodies and educational institutions. He noted that “Young India is full of dreams and energy. They are the fuel to our success.” He urged all members of society, including parents, teachers, friends, relatives, schools, and administrators, to play their part in keeping the youth encouraged and energised.

He called for the creation of a culture rooted in fairness and integrity, concluding, “We must create a culture where hard work is rewarded, honesty is encouraged, and merit wins.” Tendulkar expressed confidence that solutions would be found to strengthen children’s futures and safeguard their aspirations.

Wider Cricket Community Reacts

Tendulkar is among several prominent cricket figures who have reacted to the controversy. Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan appealed to students to maintain patience and trust in the country’s institutions, suggesting that solutions arise through dialogue and perseverance.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Kaif voiced his distress over visuals depicting police using force against protesting students in Delhi. “As a father it pains me to see students being roughed up by police for protesting over flaws in education. Kids getting beaten with lathis on the streets of Delhi should stop. I hope a solution comes up very soon,” Kaif wrote on X.

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan also expressed support for the students, asserting that years of hard work and family sacrifices should not be overshadowed by a paper leak. He urged authorities to ensure fair opportunities for every student and to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Protests Intensify

The protests have been led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and have received support from environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk. These demonstrations have intensified in recent days, leading to clashes between protestors and police.

The movement demanding the removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged lapses in the education system has gained momentum. Sonam Wangchuk supported the movement through an indefinite fast. Wangchuk, who was fasting at Jantar Mantar, was initially moved to Safdarjung Hospital after his vital parameters declined. He was later transferred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after his wife sought his transfer from the government-run facility via the Delhi High Court.

The protests escalated on July 20, when thousands of students attempted to march towards Parliament to voice their grievances. The demonstration was halted by Delhi Police, who deployed tear gas and lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
