Shubman Gill confirms Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma integral to India’s 2027 World Cup plans
India ODI captain Shubman Gill has affirmed that senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain crucial to the team’s strategy as they prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gill’s comments came ahead of the three-match ODI series against England, addressing ongoing discussions about the future roles of the experienced duo.
Speaking to reporters before the first ODI in Birmingham, Gill stated that Kohli and Sharma have been the foundation of the Indian batting line-up for the past decade and continue to be an important part of the squad. He emphasized that their positions in the team are not in question.
Experience and Stability for the Future
Gill highlighted that the value brought by Kohli and Sharma extends beyond their scoring ability, pointing to their extensive experience in high-pressure situations. He noted their consistent performances across various conditions, tournaments, and matches over the last ten years.
The captain’s remarks align with recent statements from chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who suggested that senior players should not face scrutiny in every series, particularly concerning India’s transition plans. Gill, who is 26 years old, also underscored the significance of experience within any successful team, explaining that it provides a sense of calm under pressure due to prior exposure to similar scenarios.
While the team is using the England ODIs to refine combinations for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Gill clarified that this process involves integrating younger players without disrupting the established core of the team. He believes it is necessary to give new players opportunities to gain experience, but not at the expense of proven match-winners.
Gill envisions Kohli and Sharma continuing to offer stability, around which the next generation of players can be developed and integrated into the squad.
Kohli’s Return and Mentorship
Virat Kohli is set to return to international cricket in the upcoming ODI series against England, marking his first appearance since the New Zealand series earlier this year. The three-match contest is scheduled to begin on July 14. India conducted an intensive training session at Edgbaston in preparation for the opening fixture.
During a two-hour practice session on Saturday, Kohli reportedly engaged in a nearly 30-minute discussion with ODI captain Shubman Gill. The former skipper was observed sharing valuable batting insights, covering aspects such as shot selection, game plans, and strategies to counter England’s bowling attack. Kohli also demonstrated various strokes in the nets, providing Gill with a closer look at his approach.
Kohli possesses a strong ODI record in England, having accumulated 1,349 runs across 33 matches in the country. His average in these matches stands at 51.88, including one century and 12 half-centuries. He is also nearing a significant career milestone, requiring fewer than 200 runs to reach 16,000 ODI runs.
Gill’s Captaincy Debut in England
For Shubman Gill, this series represents a notable chapter in his career. It will be his first ODI assignment in England and his inaugural overseas series as India’s ODI captain. Although he has faced England in ODIs on four occasions, all those matches were played in India, where he scored 268 runs at an average of 67. His previous encounter against England included a score of 112 runs off 102 balls.
The Indian practice session also saw Rohit Sharma spending a considerable amount of time in the nets. Pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Gurnoor Brar delivered with sharp bounce, while Kuldeep Yadav had an extended bowling spell. Local spinners were brought in to help Indian batters acclimatize to English conditions. Fielding coach T Dilip, spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutale, and throwdown specialist Dayasagar closely supervised the preparations as India geared up for the opening ODI.
The first ODI of the series is scheduled for Tuesday in Birmingham.
