Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed disappointment with the Indian team management’s decision to drop Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from the playing XI for the final T20I against England. The match, held in Southampton, saw Sanju Samson return to the squad in place of the young batter. Gavaskar stated that he was very disappointed with the coaching staff’s call to bench Sooryavanshi.
Sooryavanshi, who is 15 years old, had participated in three of the seven matches during India’s tour of the United Kingdom. Across these three appearances against England, he accumulated 42 runs. While he maintained a high strike rate, he reportedly struggled with the extra bounce from England’s pacers during his innings.
Gavaskar highlighted that Sooryavanshi had initially replaced Samson, who had faced difficulties with his batting during the tours of Ireland and England. The decision to drop Sooryavanshi after only three matches was met with strong disapproval from Gavaskar, who criticised the team management’s choice.
Speaking on the same panel, former England cricketer Graeme Swann also voiced his criticism of the Indian team management, indicating that the decision did not make sense to him. Swann argued that if Sooryavanshi was considered a generational talent, he should have been given more opportunities beyond just three matches.
Swann noted that Sooryavanshi had demonstrated his capabilities in his three games. He contrasted this with Samson’s recent performances, where Samson had scored 5, 0, and 1 in previous matches, while Sooryavanshi had scored 13, 14, and 15. Swann suggested that Samson had struggled to find runs in his last three games.
The former England player further commented on the potential impact of the decision on Sooryavanshi, given his age. Swann emphasised the need to handle a 15-year-old talent carefully, suggesting that being dropped could negatively affect his emotional development and set him back for several months. He concluded that if a 15-year-old is believed to be a potential top player, they require nurturing, and Sooryavanshi had become a victim of the team’s performance.
Debate Over Young Talent vs. Experience
The decision to drop Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the final T20I against England sparked a debate regarding the balance between backing young talent and relying on experienced players. The Indian team, led by Gautam Gambhir, opted to bring back Sanju Samson, an experienced player who had been dropped earlier in the series.
