Thomas Tuchel faces pressure as England exits World Cup, Pep Guardiola considered a potential successor
Thomas Tuchel is under increasing pressure as England’s manager following the team’s exit from the World Cup semi-finals. The Three Lions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Argentina, a match where Anthony Gordon initially gave England the lead. However, goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez secured Argentina’s victory. Tuchel has since faced criticism from former international players for his tactical decision to adopt a more defensive approach after taking the lead.
Despite the recent disappointment, the Football Association (FA) is reportedly continuing to support Tuchel. He is expected to lead the team beyond the current tournament, with his contract running until Euro 2028. Tuchel himself has stated his commitment to his contract, looking forward to the home Euros despite the current challenges.
Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison has voiced his belief that Tuchel remains the appropriate manager for England, despite increasing calls for his dismissal. Writing for FourFourTwo, Morrison highlighted the limited number of realistic alternatives available for the role. He questioned who would be a suitable replacement if Tuchel were to be sacked, suggesting that there are few managers of comparable quality currently available.
Morrison did, however, acknowledge one exception that could alter the conversation significantly. He pointed to Pep Guardiola, who recently departed Manchester City, as a dream coach for many supporters. Morrison believes that if the FA had the opportunity to hire Guardiola, they should act immediately, irrespective of Tuchel’s current contract or the timing of any vacancy. He referred to Guardiola as “the special one.”
Other names, such as Zinedine Zidane and Jurgen Klopp, were also mentioned in discussions about potential replacements. However, Zidane is reportedly heading to France following Didier Deschamps‘ departure, and Klopp is said to be taking the Germany job. This leaves Guardiola as a prominent figure if England were to consider a change in management.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney echoed similar sentiments, stating that Tuchel should remain as England manager unless the FA could secure Guardiola. Rooney believes that Tuchel is a top-class manager who learns from mistakes and improves. He questioned the availability of managers as good as Tuchel, with the exception of Guardiola. Rooney also noted Tuchel’s recent experience in a World Cup environment, suggesting that this experience is valuable.
Guardiola has reportedly expressed to close friends his interest in managing the England national team in the future, despite having previously declined an offer in 2024. He stepped down as Manchester City manager after a successful decade, during which he secured 20 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. Reports indicate that Guardiola had initially changed his mind in 2024, opting to stay at City for two more seasons, which postponed any move to the England national team.
Following his departure from Manchester City, Guardiola plans to take a break from football. He has stated his intention to rest and not train for a while, emphasizing his need to step back after 17 or 18 years of continuous demands. He expressed gratitude for his time at City, describing it as the experience of his life.
England is currently preparing for a third-place match against France at Miami Stadium. Despite the team’s disappointment at not reaching the final, Tuchel and his squad are expected to win this upcoming match.
Morrison, while acknowledging the perceived lack of importance of the third-place game, highlighted that some players might prefer to go on holiday to recharge for the upcoming season. However, the match against France remains on the schedule.
