Manchester Super Giants defeat Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred

The Hundred 2026 results: Jos Buttler scores 90 as Manchester Super Giants beat Birmingham Phoenix

The Manchester Super Giants secured an 87-run victory over Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred men’s competition at Emirates Old Trafford. The win maintains the Super Giants‘ perfect start to the tournament, marking their second consecutive victory from two matches played.

Jos Buttler was a central figure in the Super Giants‘ performance, scoring 90 runs from 50 balls. His innings helped the home side post a formidable total of 187-5 in their allotted 100 balls. This score stands as the second-highest total recorded at Old Trafford in The Hundred.

Buttler’s Dominant Batting Display

Buttler‘s innings was marked by both power-hitting and precise placement, contributing significantly to the Super Giants‘ commanding total. He struck seven fours and five sixes during his time at the crease. This performance follows his highest T20 score of 131 earlier in the month against India, continuing a strong run of form.

Despite early setbacks for the Super Giants, with Tim Seifert and captain Aiden Markram falling cheaply, Buttler anchored the innings. He reached his half-century in 31 balls. His superb innings concluded with just three balls remaining in the Super Giants‘ innings.

In addition to Buttler‘s efforts, Tom Moores contributed an unbeaten 39 runs from 17 deliveries, further bolstering the Super Giants‘ score. Buttler shared a 42-run partnership with Aiden Markram for the second wicket and later added 45 runs with Heinrich Klaasen for the third wicket. He also combined with Moores for a 68-run stand.

Furthermore, Buttler has now surpassed 1,000 runs in The Hundred competition. Across 27 matches, he has scored 1,021 runs at an average of 40.84, including nine fifties and 44 sixes in the tournament.

Phoenix’s Struggle in Reply

In response to the Super Giants‘ total, the Birmingham Phoenix struggled from the outset. Their chase began shakily, with Josh Tongue taking two wickets in consecutive balls, dismissing Will Smeed and Rehan Ahmed. Tongue finished with figures of 2-21.

Opener Joe Clarke was then dismissed by Liam Dawson, who ended with 3-15. Laurie Evans also fell shortly after, leaving the Phoenix in a difficult position at 43-4. Captain Donovan Ferreira was the top scorer for the Phoenix with 23 runs from 25 balls.

The Phoenix were ultimately bowled out for just 100 runs in 97 balls, falling well short of their target. This defeat marks their first loss of the campaign, as they were unable to recover from the early collapse. Rehan Ahmed also contributed with the ball for the Phoenix, taking 2-43.

The match itself was delayed by 30 minutes, following the washout of the women’s fixture earlier in the day. Spectators in Manchester were eventually treated to Buttler‘s impressive innings.
