American Ismail Elfath to officiate England versus Argentina semi-final
Ismail Elfath, an American official, has been appointed to referee the World Cup 2026 semi-final match between England and Argentina. The game is scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta and will be broadcast live.
The 44-year-old referee has previously overseen several matches where Lionel Messi‘s teams have secured trophies. This includes the 2023 Leagues Cup final, where Messi’s Inter Miami won in a penalty shootout against Nashville SC. Elfath was also the fourth official during Argentina‘s 2022 World Cup final victory over France.
Elfath’s Tournament Record and Disciplinary Approach
In the current tournament, Elfath has officiated four matches. These include the group stage encounters between Japan and the Netherlands, and Uruguay versus Spain. He also took charge of Norway‘s victory over Brazil in the last-16.
During these matches, Elfath has issued six yellow cards and one straight red card to Uruguay midfielder Agustin Canobbio for a high challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi. Following his dismissal, Canobbio confronted the referee.
Elfath is known for a firm disciplinary approach. His officiating team for the semi-final will include fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins as assistant referees, with Italian Maurizio Mariani serving as the fourth official.
Referee Selection and Conflict of Interest Rules
The appointment of Elfath has generated discussion, particularly concerning his past involvement in matches featuring Lionel Messi. Some online observers have noted that Inter Miami has won all four matches officiated by Elfath that involved Messi.
FIFA regulations regarding conflict of interest have ruled out English officials Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor from refereeing the World Cup final. These rules prevent referees from officiating matches involving their own country. Additionally, English and Argentine officials are ineligible for games between the two nations due to political rivalry, partly stemming from the Falklands conflict in 1982.
For similar reasons, Argentine referee Facundo Tello is also out of contention. These officials are also ineligible for the third-place play-off, as it is guaranteed to involve one of the teams from England or Argentina. The regulations also prevented Taylor from refereeing the 2022 World Cup final.
Elfath, originally from Morocco, moved to America at the age of 18 after securing a US government-backed diversity visa lottery. He has been officiating in Major League Soccer since 2012 and has twice received the MLS referee of the year award.
The semi-final holds significant importance for both competing nations. England is aiming for their first World Cup final appearance since their victory in 1966, while defending champions Argentina seek to reach a second consecutive final as Messi continues his pursuit of another world title.
Recent Controversies and FIFA’s Stance
This appointment occurs during a tournament that has seen debate over refereeing decisions in Argentina‘s knockout stage victories against Egypt and Switzerland. In their defeat, Egypt had a goal disallowed, and Switzerland‘s Breel Embolo received a red card following a VAR review, leading to criticism from players and officials after both matches.
Speculation has arisen online, with some suggesting that FIFA has favoured Argentina, particularly given that this is anticipated to be Messi’s final World Cup. However, football’s governing body has consistently refuted such claims.
Pierluigi Collina, FIFA‘s head of refereeing, has defended match officials, stating that referees operate independently and are not subject to external pressures. He also cautioned that unsubstantiated allegations can expose officials and their families to abuse and threats, asserting that all decisions are made in good faith.
The match in Atlanta on Wednesday is scheduled for 20:00 BST.
