India’s quicks and Axar restrict England to 258 in first ODI

England concluded their innings at 258 runs in the first One Day International (ODI) against India. The match, part of a three-match ODI series, is being played in Birmingham. Joe Root was a key contributor for England, remaining unbeaten with 76 runs. Liam Dawson also made a significant contribution to the total.
The England innings saw a recovery after a challenging start, with Root and Dawson building a partnership. Despite the recovery, England were all out for under 260 runs, with some observers suggesting a target of 280+ might have been achievable. India’s bowling attack, featuring pacers and spinner Axar Patel, played a role in limiting England’s score.
India’s Chase Begins
In response, India began their chase with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Sharma, at 39 years old, got off the mark with a single. Gill clipped his first ball for four runs. The Edgbaston pitch showed considerable bounce, causing some challenges for the batters early in the innings.
Josh Tongue, making his ODI debut for England, took the new ball. His initial over saw Gill flick a boundary through midwicket. Tongue later almost secured a wicket with consecutive deliveries, first with Gill gloving a lifter short of gully, then slicing one just short of Jacks at point. Jofra Archer also bowled with the new ball, beating Rohit Sharma twice in the third over.
Archer continued to trouble the Indian batters. In the ninth over, he beat Shreyas Iyer, who then flicked the ball for four runs between the keeper and leg slip. Archer then dismissed Virat Kohli for 5 runs in his fifth over. Kohli was out LBW after missing a flick to leg from a full, straight delivery, following a short ball that he gloved for four.

After Kohli’s dismissal, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer formed a partnership. Gill displayed strong batting, including a cover drive for four runs in the 12th over. Iyer also contributed, dealing with a wide half-volley from Sam Curran and later edging a shot just wide of the diving gully. England’s bowlers, including Tongue and Curran, continued to search for wickets.

Team Dynamics and Series Context
The ODI series marks the return of experienced players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah to the Indian squad. Sharma and Kohli, who are 39 and almost 38 years old respectively, are aiming for a strong performance in this format. Their inclusion is seen as significant, especially after the Indian T20 team, under a new T20 skipper Shreyas Iyer, had a challenging recent tour where they lost all but one of their seven T20I matches, with the one match not lost being abandoned.
The Indian team’s recent T20I performances included a 0-2 defeat against Ireland and a 0-4 loss to England. An ODI series win could provide a confidence boost for the team. The return of Shubman Gill and K L Rahul further strengthens India’s batting lineup. The bowling unit sees Bumrah’s comeback after a rest, alongside new fast bowling prospect Gurnoor Brar, and left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh. Shivam Dube is also included as a fourth seamer due to the absence of Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
For England, the inclusion of Joe Root adds depth to their batting. Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell are expected to provide explosive power alongside Jos Buttler. England has not played any 50-over cricket since January 27, when they were on an away tour of Sri Lanka, which could be a factor in their performance in this series.
The match continues with India chasing 259 for victory.
