Declan Rice expected to start for England in World Cup semi-final against Argentina

England Face Big Fitness Concern Ahead Of FIFA World Cup 2026 Semifinal Against Argentina

England’s Squad Fitness Ahead of Semi-Final

England midfielder Declan Rice is anticipated to be fit enough to start in the World Cup semi-final match against Argentina on Wednesday. Rice had been substituted at half-time during England’s quarter-final victory over Norway due to illness, having spent three days in bed prior to that game. However, reports indicate that the Arsenal player has recovered and participated in a full training session on Monday in Kansas City.

Manager Thomas Tuchel had previously noted Rice’s struggles, mentioning that the decision to remove him at half-time against Norway was a difficult one but necessary to manage substitutions, especially with the prospect of extra-time. The conditions in Miami, where the quarter-final was played, with high heat and humidity, were described as having an effect similar to temperatures of 44 degrees Celsius.

In addition to Rice, Nico O’Reilly is also expected to be available for selection despite experiencing a hamstring problem during the match against Norway. O’Reilly had gestured for a substitution in the second half but is understood not to have sustained a major strain. The Manchester City player expressed his excitement for the upcoming game, stating his long-held dream of participating in the World Cup.

Another fitness concern for England was Ezri Konsa, who suffered from cramp against Norway. The Aston Villa defender is also projected to be in contention to start at right-back. Tuchel may also consider recalling Reece James, who came on as a second-half substitute against Norway, and Bukayo Saka, who made an impression after coming off the bench.

The squad’s overall fitness has reportedly improved significantly since the demanding win over Norway. Apart from Jarell Quansah, who is suspended, and Jordan Henderson, who has a broken wrist, England is expected to have a nearly full squad available for selection. Several players, including Harry Kane, Elliot Anderson, Marc Guehi, and John Stones, played the full 120 minutes against Norway and are being monitored for recovery from the extreme conditions.

Goalkeeper’s Perspective on the Argentina Clash

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has emphasised the importance of maintaining composure during the semi-final against Argentina. He stated that the team must not be distracted by the historical rivalry between the two nations, which dates back to their last World Cup encounter in 2002. Pickford believes that keeping a cool head will be crucial for securing a victory.

Pickford highlighted England’s mentality throughout the tournament, noting their focus on football rather than engaging in altercations or being swayed by referee decisions. He stressed that the team resets and continues to play, letting their performance speak for itself. This approach, he suggested, demonstrates their mental fortitude and ability to stay concentrated.

When asked about facing Lionel Messi, Pickford acknowledged Messi’s talent but also pointed out the strength of the entire Argentina team, indicating that England’s focus would not solely be on one player. He described the match as an opportunity to compete against a great nation, with both teams being among the top four in the world rankings.

Authorities in Atlanta are preparing for a large turnout of supporters from both countries, with many seats in the stadium being unsegregated. Pickford recognised the significance of the game but reiterated the need for England to remain focused on the football itself and not get caught up in the occasion. He views the match as a game of football between two passionate sets of fans, bringing nations together.

Pickford, who was part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of the European Championship in 2021 and 2024, expressed that while winning major silverware is a dream, the immediate focus is entirely on Wednesday’s semi-final. He underscored the challenge of facing a talented Argentina team and the importance of England performing at their best to reach the World Cup final.

The referee for the match in Atlanta has been confirmed as Ismail Elfath, an American official from MLS, who previously officiated Norway’s win over Brazil in the last 16 stage of the tournament.

Squad Depth and Unused Players

While key players are returning to fitness, some members of the England squad have seen limited or no action during the tournament. Kobbie Mainoo is one of three outfield players who has not featured at all. The other two are Ivan Toney and Trevoh Chalobah.

Chalobah joined the squad as a late replacement for an injured player, understanding his role as a backup defender. Toney was informed by Tuchel that he is a ‘finisher’ and unlikely to start unless Harry Kane, who has scored six goals in the tournament, is injured. Mainoo, however, has reportedly appeared somewhat disappointed, often being the first to leave the dressing room and board the team bus alone after matches, though not sulking.

The medical and physiotherapy staff have implemented an extensive rehabilitation program over the past two days to address the cramp and extreme fatigue experienced by several players after Sunday’s game. Tuchel has one final training session in Kansas City to finalise his tactics and team selection before facing Argentina.
