Folarin Balogun anticipated controversy over World Cup ban suspension
United States striker Folarin Balogun stated he expected significant controversy following Fifa’s decision to suspend his one-game ban during the World Cup. He also noted the resulting anxiety among his teammates.
Balogun, 25, was dismissed for serious foul play against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the round of 32, which typically results in an automatic suspension. However, Fifa’s disciplinary committee suspended the implementation of his ban for a probationary period of a year. This decision drew widespread criticism, particularly after it became known that US President Donald Trump and White House officials had contacted football’s global governing body regarding the sanction.
The striker, who scored three goals at the World Cup, was subsequently able to play in the USA’s last-16 defeat by Belgium. European football’s governing body, Uefa, described Fifa’s decision as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.”
Balogun’s Reaction and Team Dynamics
Balogun expressed his initial happiness at being back with the team but quickly realised the decision would generate considerable controversy. He observed a sense of unease among his teammates due to the unique nature of the situation.
“The closer we got to the game, I focused the best I could but it was difficult. The outside noise is hard to avoid,” Balogun told CBS. He added that his teammates provided reassurance, acknowledging that the situation was beyond his control.
The decision to allow Balogun to play came just two days before the United States’ 4-1 loss to Belgium. Balogun learned he could feature in the match while on the team bus, a revelation that led to “screaming and shouting” among the squad.
Given the unusual nature of avoiding an immediate suspension for a straight red card, Balogun had not been part of the initial preparations for the game. He mentioned that the team had been practicing without him, and he had taken on a supporting role to maintain morale.
“When we found out on the team bus, everyone was screaming and shouting. It was a pretty intense bus ride to the practice field,” Balogun recalled.
Impact and Broader Implications
Despite the defeat to Belgium, Balogun, who did not score in that match, believes the controversy did not distract Mauricio Pochettino’s side. He emphasised the team’s professionalism and their ability to separate emotion from the task at hand.
“It was about separating the emotion from the job at hand. We are all professionals,” he stated. “It was not something that was too difficult to separate once we got over the initial announcement that I would be back in the team.”
Balogun acknowledged the difficulty of the game against Belgium, which could overshadow discussions about the team’s focus. However, he affirmed that from within the camp, there was full concentration leading into the match.
The head of Fifa’s disciplinary committee declined to answer questions regarding the decision-making process that allowed Balogun to avoid the ban. Fifa president Gianni Infantino has previously denied influencing disciplinary decisions.
In a similar incident, England’s Jarell Quansah received a red card in England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo. The same disciplinary committee ruled that Quansah should serve a two-match ban. This was classified as serious foul play, resulting in the Bayer Leverkusen player receiving an additional match suspension beyond the automatic one-game ban from Fifa.
