India secures six-wicket victory over England in first ODI at Edgbaston
India defeated England by six wickets in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Edgbaston, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. This victory marked India’s first win of their current tour of the United Kingdom. Chasing a target of 259, India experienced an early setback with Rohit Sharma scoring 11 and Virat Kohli making five, leaving the team at 48 for two. Shubman Gill then took control, building a 101-run partnership for the third wicket with vice-captain Shreyas Iyer. Gill’s innings of 80 runs from 75 balls included 11 fours and a six. Following Gill’s departure, England briefly found a way back into the contest. Shreyas Iyer was run out for 35, and KL Rahul was bowled by Josh Tongue for one, leaving India at 160 for four in the 28th over. However, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar then formed an unbeaten 102-run stand for the fifth wicket, ensuring no further setbacks for India.
Axar Patel, who had struggled for runs in the recent T20I series, remained unbeaten with 57 runs from 52 balls. Washington Sundar finished with 52 not out from 63 deliveries. The pair effectively managed Jofra Archer’s pace and rotated strike against England’s spinners, guiding India to victory in 45.2 overs.
England’s Selection and Performance
England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, and captain, Harry Brook, made selection decisions that were questioned after the match. The dry surface at Edgbaston offered variable bounce for the quick bowlers, but England’s XI included five spin options and only three seamers. This left the team short on genuine wicket-taking threats, forcing an early use of Jofra Archer’s overs.
The decision meant that an additional seamer would likely have replaced Liam Dawson. However, Dawson’s performance, alongside Joe Root, was crucial in giving England’s bowlers a defendable total. Despite Root’s unbeaten 76, England’s tailenders collapsed, with the last four wickets falling for just 30 runs, leading to their dismissal for 258 inside the 48th over.
This defeat marks England’s 13th ODI loss since McCullum took charge of the white-ball teams. The team has secured only six victories during this period, including three against the West Indies, and has slipped to eighth in the world rankings. The next World Cup is a 50-over event scheduled for late 2027.
Axar Patel was the bowler who dismissed England’s tail, finishing with four for 62. His impact was also significant in the chase, where he maintained the momentum with his controlled innings.
