India also had a successful start in the women’s pairs event, with Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh defeating Malta in a tie-break in their initial match. The lawn bowls competition has already commenced, with India making a winning start.

For boxing, Jadumani Singh is scheduled to compete in the men’s 55kg Round of 32 against Aaron Cullen of Scotland at 11:00 PM.

India’s Campaign and Expectations

The Commonwealth Games 2026 officially began in Glasgow, marking what is anticipated to be the smallest edition of the event in over three decades. The opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro welcomed approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations. Unlike previous editions, these Games will feature only 10 sports across four venues, with six sports also including para events.

Glasgow took over as host after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew in 2023 due to rising costs. The city, which previously hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games, is utilizing existing venues and infrastructure with a budget of around 160 million pounds.

India aims to continue its record of finishing within the top five of the medals table, a feat achieved at every edition since Manchester 2002. However, this year’s challenge is expected to be more difficult due to the absence of several medal-rich sports from the program. Sports such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and shooting, which contributed significantly to India’s 61 medals in 2022, are not part of this edition. These four sports alone accounted for 25 of India’s medals in 2022.

With these sports absent, India will rely on strong performances from disciplines like athletics, boxing, and weightlifting to maintain its impressive record. Athletics is expected to play a crucial role, with India fielding its largest contingent in this discipline, comprising 32 members. The team will compete in 22 medal events. Key athletes include two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, and both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams. Athletics contributed eight medals for India at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games 2026 opening ceremony featured a host of Scottish artists, including Tom Walker, KT Tunstall, Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt, Valtos, and Nathan Evans, celebrating the country’s music and culture.
