Rohit Sharma’s future in ODI setup uncertain amid leadership tensions
Tensions between Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Gautam Gambhir are reportedly impacting the direction of the Indian cricket team. These differing visions for the team’s future could lead to significant changes ahead of upcoming tournaments, including the ODI World Cup.
Sources indicate a lack of mutual trust among the three key figures. This dynamic is drawing comparisons to past controversies within the team management, such as the Sourav Ganguly–Greg Chappell situation in 2005. The relationship between Rohit and the Gambhir-Agarkar duo is described as strained, with a communication breakdown potentially affecting India’s preparations.
Uncertainty around Rohit’s ODI future
Rohit Sharma’s place in the ODI squad is uncertain, with selectors reportedly favouring Yashasvi Jaiswal for a long-term role. This plan is said to have the support of the Indian team management, particularly head coach Gautam Gambhir. The national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is keen to give Jaiswal an extended opportunity in the ODI format.
The removal of Rohit from the ODI captaincy after the Champions Trophy further exacerbated his relationship with Agarkar and Gambhir. This decision, made seven months after the ICC event, reportedly broke Rohit’s trust. The lack of 50-over cricket after the IPL meant Rohit had limited game time before the captaincy change.
According to one report, the match at Lord’s on Sunday against England could be Rohit Sharma’s final international appearance. He has already retired from Test cricket and T20 Internationals. The selection committee has reportedly decided that he will not be the first-choice opener after the England series.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel expressed hope that Rohit would sign off with a century if the Lord’s ODI is indeed his last. Patel noted that Rohit has a history of responding strongly after a period of low scores, often bouncing back with match-winning innings. He pointed to Rohit’s 47-ball 26 in India’s defeat in the second ODI at Cardiff, where he struggled to adjust to variable bounce.
Growing rift and past echoes
The current situation highlights a significant power struggle within the Indian cricket leadership. The relationship between Rohit, Agarkar, and Gambhir is characterized by a lack of mutual trust, with each individual holding strong convictions. This contrasts with the period when Rahul Dravid served as head coach, reportedly acting as a unifying figure between Rohit and Agarkar during successful campaigns, including the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies, which India won under Rohit’s captaincy.
Gambhir’s approach is described as distinct from Dravid’s man-management style. An incident during the 2024 IPL, when Kolkata Knight Riders played Mumbai Indians, saw Rohit reportedly approach Gambhir, encouraging him to join the Indian team. Gambhir’s alleged response was that he would join if Rohit remained captain. However, some observers had cautioned Rohit about the different challenge Gambhir’s management style would present compared to Dravid’s.
Cracks in the relationship reportedly began to appear after India’s 0-3 Test series loss to New Zealand at home, with a complete breakdown by the time of the Australia Tour. On January 2, before the New Year’s Day Test against Australia at Sydney, Rohit was seen in a prolonged discussion with Gambhir and Agarkar at the SCG. Sources close to the selection panel indicated that Agarkar had advised Rohit against sitting out, warning it could affect his selection for the subsequent series in England.
Rohit reportedly considered retiring from Tests at that time. However, in an interview with broadcasters, he stated, “I am a father of two. I know what is good for me.” This statement reportedly stunned Agarkar and Gambhir, further damaging their already fragile trust. Conflicting accounts emerged regarding Rohit’s commitment to the England tour, with his camp insisting he committed to all five games, while the selection committee’s side claimed he would decide after the first two Tests. This disagreement reportedly led to selectors informing Rohit he would be dropped, prompting his retirement announcement.
When Agarkar informed Rohit about moving on with the 2027 World Cup in mind, the disappointment was significant, and conversations were difficult. Both Agarkar and Gambhir were aligned on this decision, leaving Rohit as a “lone ranger” whose primary goal was to win the 50-over World Cup. The lack of clarity and communication is believed to have affected Rohit’s batting style and performance. The next ODI for India is scheduled for September 27 against the West Indies at home.
